Knowing about how your child processes information can be very helpful at both home and school!  In assessing information processing , we will discover if your child favors more auditory (hearing) or visual (seeing) processing.  For example, assessing information can be helpful in understanding WHY your child may struggle with following verbal directions or instructions.  

I have seen children who have driven their parents nuts because they don’t follow instructions the first time at home, but they do at school.  When I scored their information processing assessment, I discovered that they had a strong preference for visual learning.  They had a hard time at home because instructions were given like, “Ok, it’s time to clean your room, take out the trash, and put your clothes away.”  At school, instructions were written out on the projector, so the child could read them and see them visually.  Simply writing out the chore list made all the difference and provided many opportunities for success for the child and the parents!  

Everyone processes information and almost everyone has a preference or considers themselves a “visual” or “auditory learner.”  Instead of taking years to figure out the preference, this simple evaluation for information processing can help give some guidance and end the frustration, shame, and fighting for a lot of parents and children.  When teachers and parents communicate in ways that are hard to comprehend or remember, it is the teacher or parents responsibility to adapt.
