Child Counseling in Cumming, GA

Children are unique—distinctly not adolescents or adults.  Children learn, talk, think, and understand their worlds through play.  Play therapy (PT) is a developmentally appropriate form of child counseling for kids roughly aged 3 to 10 years old. Dr. Jimenez has been trained at the top play therapy program in the country here at the University of North Texas. Unlike traditional talk therapy, getting children to talk is not the point of PT; however, allowing children the space and time to express themselves is vital to play therapy.

Toys are the words of a child and play is their language.   An adult client would seek out a counselor who speaks the same language.  A counselor who works with children should speak the language of play.  While working with your child, the counselor aims to become fluent in your child’s dialect of their language of play.

There is a lot more going on in play in a play room than one might initially think.  The relationship between any client and counselor is one of the most important factors to the success of counseling.  The relationship between the counselor and your child is formed through play, developed through play, and deepened through play. Through play, your child communicates their strengths, their struggles, their perspectives, themes in their lives, and many other aspects of who they are and what they think.

Just as a counselor aims to get to know an adult client through talking, a counselor aims to get to know your child through play.  Play is powerful.  Play is the work of your child, the joy of your child, the very language of your child.

Play Therapy for Children

Children's Play Therapy typically involves your child meeting with their counselor once weekly for 30 to 45 minutes with every 4th session being a meeting between you (the parents) and the counselor.  This is called a parent consultation and allows for the parents to provide school and home updates to the counselor.  Parent consultations last for approximately 50-60 minutes.  This is also a perfect time for the counselor to share observations of themes and progress with your child.   Parent consultations also allow time for the relationship between you and the counselor to deepen.

This opens up endless possibilities for collaboration between parents and the counselor.  The counselor is able to give some ideas, tips, and tricks to parents about how they can further help their child at home.  After all, parents have much more influence and time spent with the child than any counselor could have.
